This group of business owners meet monthly to go over state business policy, and each month a different local business leader is invited to speak. Tom spoke to this group about the ARRL, some of whom were learning about the organization for the first time. He received an enthusiastic response. This appearance is another step in ARRL's efforts for community outreach in the Hartford area. Development Reported by Lauren Clarke, KB1YDD The Temple Amateur Radio Club in Temple, Texas, recently contributed $1,000 to the Spectrum Defense Fund. TARC has been a generous contributor to ARRL since 2007. With this donation, we are pleased to welcome TARC as a Maxim Society member. The Fall Spectrum Defense mailing, being sent to 60,000 members, was dropped this week. Education Reported by Debra Johnson, K1DMJ We are preparing for the ARISS International 20th Anniversary celebration when it holds its annual meeting at Johnson Space Center in Houston on November 15-18. The meeting agenda includes presentations and discussions on Hardware Development, Education, and Sustainability and Funding. Leona Adams also reports that Paul Cowley, KB7VML, of Ames, Iowa, has been nominated to run for the office of Section Manager in Iowa. The nomination deadline for both of these elections, among others in this cycle, is Friday, December 9, 2016. Maryland-DC Section Manager Mary Pittinger, KB3MXM, worked with Headquarters staff members to prepare for his presentation at a Mini Makers Faire at his local Barnes & Noble bookstore in Pikesville on November 5 and 6. During his presentation, Marty planned to cover topics related to Amateur Radio and basic electronics/electricity. Barnes & Noble partnered with the Baltimore County school system to promote this event. Lab Reported by Ed Hare, W1RFI Product Review Bob Allison is testing an HF, 5 Watt software defined transceiver. Bob also has several other transceivers and accessories to test that have been purchased for QST Product review, so please look for Bob in the screen room as he will not be in his office most of the time. Radio Frequency Interference Mike Gruber reviewed the 2017 Handbook chapter on RFI for the upcoming 2018 revision for Ward Silver. Mike Gruber reviewed the changes in p1897 from the last Working Group meeting and started updates for the next draft. Travel Bob Allison traveled to Montgomeryville, PA to speak at the Warminster Amateur Radio Club. The topic was Transceiver Performance Testing and the QST Product Review Process. Approximately 100 people attended. Bob received a call from a Radio Amateur wishing to donate a vintage transmitter. It just so happens that the donor lived very close to Montgomeryville, PA. Bob came back with a World Radio Laboratories Globe Champ, a 350 Watt power input CW/AM transmitter from 1960 that is in very good condition, suitable for display. Production/Editorial Reported by Becky Schoenfeld, W1BXY Digital Media Alli has been working with production to put together a how-to guide for members for the transition from digital QST's to the PageSuite platform. They have received demo Android and iOS apps and are working with PageSuite to improve their functions for our members. Sales and Marketing Reported by Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R Jackie Ferreira reports that some email promotions featuring publications and products are being prepared for the Thanksgiving holiday, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. A flyer promoting the 2017 ARRL Handbook is being prepared for mailing to a targeted list of previous-edition purchasers, members, and customers. ARRL has received payment of $8,615 for commissions earned on new and renewal subscriptions of RFinder made during the third quarter. Year to date commissions are $16,557. ARRL established an agreement with RFinder, creator of a web and app-based directory of Amateur Radio repeaters, in February to be our preferred online resource of repeater frequencies. Sean Kutzko shot some short video segments with Bob Inderbitzen to help produce a 30-second video promotion for The ARRL Handbook, intended to be used on our social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.). ARRL earned $3,404 in October for the ARRL Visa Card program; year to date $38,844 ($35,913 Jan-Oct 2015). Program details have been updated at www.arrl.org/visa<http://www.arrl.org/visa>, which describes the ARRL Visa Signature Card (a no annual fee credit card). US Bank is the creditor and issuer of the credit card, which was introduced to ARRL members in 2005. ARRL has received a $1,620 donation from the AmazonSmile Foundation for program activity between July 1 and September 31, 2016 (Q2/2016 $1,485; Q1/2016 $1,474; Y2015 $4,724; Y2014 $1,913). The foundation donates 0.5% of the purchase price of eligible AmazonSmile items to ARRL-from purchases made by members and friends who have selected American Radio Relay League (ARRL) as their charity of choice.
