John, that particular increase was $3/year. At the time there was an optional 65+ discount of $6 so the basic rate went from $31 to $34 and the senior rate went from $25 to $28.

At the end of 1998 membership was 162,626. In those days total licensing was in the vicinity of 650,000. How many of those licensees were alive/active is unknown, as is the case with today’s 709,575 licensees.

Dave

How much did membership drop in the year after the dues increase? And how much was the dues increase?

160k of 700,000 licensess = 22.9% of Hams are ARRL members. Dave, do you know the percentage for 1997? Would be an interesting comparison.

Thanks to everyone at HQ for their work in increasing the membership.

Dave,

This is great news.  It certainly helps to relieve pressure on the cash
position as the numbers increase.  We need to keep the numbers growing!
Regards and congratulations to the membership folks.

What was the highest membership recorded in the past?

ARRL membership ended the year on a strong note with the total
exceeding
160,000 for the first time since March 2002! A banner in the HQ lobby
(see attached courtesy of Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R) tells the tale.

Every division except Great Lakes saw an increase in membership during
the year. International membership grew the most percentage-wise. The
leading division in growth this year was Pacific - see
http://www.arrl.org/membership-stats for the division and section
breakdowns.
