Please note that my comments related to the message on Mike's telephone, not his automatic e-mail reply.  The question as I see it is whether or not the phone of someone in his position should be covered somehow at all times.

Hi Gang,

I read this a bit differently.  Mike is gone until March 24 and the e-mail
out-of-office says this.  It also notes others in HQ that can be contacted
directly.  What is wrong with this approach?  I expect he can be directly
contacted by someone at HQ if it is really necesary.  This is the same
type of message that I used at work for years, with few problems.

If he is on vacation, I would not want him bothered for every event or
inquiry that might come up.  This is certainly better then having e-mails
stack-up for a week without any reply.  That would show a lack of
interest.
