Development

Reported by Mary Hobart, K1MMH

Work continues on a new Spectrum Defense Fund approach using a newsletter format – The ARRL Spectrum Defense Update – to communicate regularly with ARRL donor and members regarding issues related to the protection of Amateur Radio frequencies.  The first issue is scheduled to be ready for mail and electronic distribution the first week in July.

Gross revenues for the ARRL Diamond Club reached $149,709 through April 30.  The Diamond Club program is seeing increases in every measurement from revenues net of membership dues up 74% to the number of pledges (monthly or quarterly installments) up 68.3%, the number of new Diamond Club donors up 69.5%, and the number of renewals up 35%.  The average new and renewal contributions are down slightly, which reflects the increased number of installment payments.  But the total revenues on the year should continue to be above the 2009 levels.

The W1AW Endowment campaign continues to climb.  So far the campaign has reach $68, 702 in contributions…$3702 over its $65,000 goal.

After a hiatus, the ARRL Audio News returned Thursday, May 27.  With the advent of the new ARRL Web site, we have had to make some changes in the way the Audio News is presented. For the time being, it will only be available as one mp3 file.  You can find the latest ARRL Audio News at www.arrl.org/arrl-audio-news on most Thursdays.

Khrystyne Keane wrote and distributed The ARRL Letter and voiced and produced ARRL Audio News for May 27, 2010.

Steve Sant Andrea helped provide communications support for the Hole in the Wall camp’s Angel Ride Saturday and Sunday.  Angel Ride is a bicycle tour that runs from across Connecticut through ARES regions 3, 4 and 5.  Besides providing general information about bike flow past his checkpoints, on Sunday 2 meter communications was used to obtain transport for a distressed cyclist who was unable to continue to the end of the race.

Sales at our exhibit in Dayton contributed $68.6k to direct sales in May ($64k in 2009, $58k in 2008, $48k in 2007).

May sales were bolstered by the introduction of some new titles: ARRL’s PIC Programming for Beginners ($25,397), Storm Spotting and Amateur Radio ($12,606), Remote Operating for Amateur Radio ($7,149), and TravelPlus for Repeaters on CD-ROM ($23.5k). The 2010 Field Day gear (shirts, hats, pins and mugs) contributed $35k in sales this month. The ARRL Field Day Handbook contributed $6.5k.

Field Organization/Public Service Team

Leona Adams received and acknowledged a petition nominating Roberto Jimenez, KP4AC, to run for Section Manager of Puerto Rico for the next term of office.  The deadline to receive nominations for this next term (starting in October) is June 4.  Steve Ewald and Leona have been assisting Section Managers with questions about the new ARRL Web site and its resources.  Steve has also been working on the Public Service column for August QST.

Radio amateurs from Michigan and South Florida have completed their training to become Official Observers during the past week.  Region 1 volunteer monitors reported to Headquarters about CODAR interference, and this report was forwarded to our ARRL volunteer monitors.  Chuck Skolaut also dealt with an issue on interference to a simplex users group, provided research for an FCC case, answered questions on the FCC petition process, and filled in as an operator at W1AW for a morning code practice session.
