Dave,
First, I’d sure like to know how
widespread the “error” covered. Second, my level of “un-“trust
of RC at this moment says this current fiasco is merely another in a step down
the old rosy path, and is indicative of gross disregard or at least carelessness
by RC for the welfare of their volunteers. My gut tells me it is this
that is the real problem, not the fact that Mybackgroundcheck.com screwed up.
I will hold off discussing the situation
at least for now; however, I believe by discussing it, we would demonstrate
vividly our concern for our members to our members. Isn’t this what
they deserve?
Just an alternate opinion.

MyBackgroundCheck.com Marketing Campaign
Jim, my advice is
that we not do an All Points Bulletin on this subject.
Most ARRL members
are not affected by this. The ones that are, will be receiving a followup email
from the vendor.
If asked about it by
an ARRL member, of course we should tell them what we know (namely, that the
first email was sent in error and should be disregarded). Telling our members
“If you received such-and-such message please disregard it” when
most of them didn’t receive it and won’t know what we’re talking
about (and won’t care) is a recipe for confusion and make-work.

Dave,
I understand your request not to discuss
the note from RC. You are not suggesting we should avoid discussing the
Mybackgroundcheck.com solicitation, are you? This solicitation is a
public, done-deal.
Let me know. Tnx.

Jim, I would advise
against doing that.
Right now it’s
a Red Cross issue. If you bring it up, it becomes an ARRL issue.

Dave,
Inasmuch as we do not know how widely the
Mybackgroundcheck.com solicitation was distributed, I would like to explain the
issue in my coming e-letter. Before doing this, I want to be certain it
is OK to refer to the position Ms. Hurst stated on behalf of the agency.
Is this OK to do?
Tnx,
Jim

The Red Cross has
disavowed the email:
The
following message is from Melissa Hurst, Senior Vice President, Human
Resources:
Many
employees and volunteers received an e-mail this morning from the Red Cross
background check vendor, MyBackgroundCheck.com, which was sent in error. The message
is entitled, “Your American Red Cross Background Check Results”.
Please disregard this e-mail, as it was not an approved message from the
American Red Cross.
Human
Resources at national headquarters has contacted the vendor who will send a
subsequent e-mail to all those who received the original message notifying them
of the error. No action is required on your part regarding any of these
messages. We will research the situation with the vendor to determine where the
error occurred and ensure that it does not happen again.
We
regret any confusion or disruption this has caused you; please feel free to
share this message with your employees and volunteers. Thank you.

MyBackgroundCheck.com Marketing Campaign
Apparently
MyBackgroundCheck.com is sending an e-mail like the one shown below to everyone
who had a Red Cross background check attempting to convince them to sign up for
ongoing service. It says that the Red Cross does not require it, but I
wonder how many will fall for it anyway? (I removed the member's name
from the e-mail to protect his privacy).
