Morning Edition on NPR had this sweet little story this morning. I'm not familiar with WiFi -- is that a Bluetooth-type device? I suspect the guy may be busting the Part 15 rules with his antennas. Dunno if he's a ham, but the program detailed some of the typical "ham ingenuity" make-do capers we all come up with at Field Day etc. Bruce (PS If you caught NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday, you heard the daughter of a friend telling about how "all globes have Colby KS on them". Actually, it's just Replogle globes....) http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/me/20020212.me.08.ram Wireless Internet NPR's John McChesney visits Aspen, Colorado, where entrepreneur Jim Selby has set up a wireless network that gives residents quick access to the Internet. Selby has put directional wireless antennas on about 40 homes in the hills surrounding Aspen, so nearly the whole town can receive signals that provide his free wireless Web connection. To form the network, he uses a WiFi (why-fy) transmitter. A new company called "Boingo" makes software that would enables wireless access to WiFi service providers across the country. (6:11)

SAVI Comments, ET Docket 01-278

Greetings. Here are our SAVI comments, as filed today. Exhibit A, not attached to this, is a copy of the interference study that Ed Hare and Zack Lau had done for us, and which Paul Rinaldo and I presented to OET as an ex parte presentation a few weeks ago. SAVI has lost no time in rebutting it, but fortunately, their engineers are not as good as Ed and Zack, who report that SAVI is incorrect in their arguments. Ed is preparing a rebuttal, which we will present to OET when El Presidente Haynie does his FCC rounds two weeks hence. We will also be filing strong reply comments. This is a barn burner of a proceeding, in which we will be pulling out all the stops lobbying FCC. Paul and I will be spending a lot of time on this proceeding in the near term. Electricity!

Hi Folks, Yes, last night the lights came on. Thirteen days without electricity makes you appreciate what happens each time you flip a switch. I was really tired of smelling like generator gasoline and lamp oil. I know Judy was tired of me smelling like that. ;-) I have one antenna back up, the 80 meter inverted vee that I use to check into the nets. I have no idea when I'll get the rest repaired and back up. Maybe I can catch Ducie Island on 80 meters. Access is now available ONLY to officers, directors, vice directors, and a small number of volunteers (CAC members will be added shortly) to a sample of what we will be able to do with contest line scores on the Web site. Go to http://www.arrl.org/members-only/contests/. There you will find preliminary results for the November 2001 CW Sweepstakes. There are 1,268 logs in the database that can be selected and sorted according to a variety of criteria. For example, you can see who made the most contacts on each band, who got a clean sweep, and even how many entrants sent each possible check (the year first licensed). A couple of caveats. This is a work in progress. While the logs have been through the cross-checking process they are not "official" as there may be errors in category, section, etc., that will be corrected prior to publication. Not all of the data fields have been populated; guest operators and affiliated clubs (except paper entries) are not yet shown. There are no band breakdowns for paper entries. I have been getting one or two e-mails each day wanting to know what the ARRL is doing (or not doing) about Homeland Security. Many of our members feel that the League is not doing anything. I have tried to reply to as many as I can telling them to sit tight and let us find out just where the best place amateur radio can serve. Below is a copy of a message that may help you explain to the members that we are indeed working hard to determine amateur radios role in Homeland Security. I plan to send the same out to the SM's so they too, can see that we are not just sitting on our hands. Tauzin told investors UWB was trend to watch, explaining how technology goes through walls, could result in high-tech home security systems, communications devices for military, disaster recovery aids. "My hope, my prayer, to the Commission is to give it a good look," he said. Tauzin said that taking up "twin issues" of privacy and security were among his Committee's most important tasks this year. "The first battle line" is copyright, he said, "how to provide a digital product without losing value... coupled with security needs." He said other "things to watch" were: (1) Efforts to develop privacy policy that would "enhance private efforts to self-regulate. (2) Broadband deployment. (3) Digital TV transition.
