The following message is from the woman in my town that I call the anti-smart-electric-meter lady. As the message shows, her group is raising money for its quest to save us from 5G cellphone service. Remember that they have already been successful in Los Angeles by stopping installation of a first-responder network. They make noise, and our technically savvy politicians listen. I want to forward the e-mail to the League's RF Safety Committee, and have them comment on whether there is such a thing as "electrohypersensitive people," as discussed in the last reference. The ARRL's web-site does not appear to be up to date regarding the RF Safety Committee. At least putting *RF Safety Committee* into the search window brings up old membership. If this finds its way to someone who can get the question answered, please do so. Hi all: I have put more Vice Directors on committees and assigned work to Vice Directors more than any other President. I have for years, even before I was President, made a conscious effort to engage Vice Directors on assignments, so I don't want anyone to jump my rear for what I am about to say. 1.) We need A&F to look at costs. Remember, our budget doesn't look that healthy this year. I suspect it will cost more than the numbers mentioned already. 2.) Effectiveness of committees needs to be considered. You folks who are committee chairs, and those who have been in the past, know the problems when you increase the audience. It can be a problem in running an effective meeting, even with mere observers. I still remember the "old rule" that was followed until recent years that if you were not on the committee, you did not talk. Period. I've actually seen more than one Director, who was not on the committee, be asked to leave by the Director who chaired the committee for this reason. They kept interjecting themselves into the committee's work to the point it was counterproductive to the meeting. Let the committee do it's work was the message. We've gotten away from that rule, but I have seen this problem numerous times, even recently. Just something to consider. Observing is fine but some observers just have to interject themselves, and you know what I mean. 3.) Meeting space is a problem. I agree about the space at W1AW. Some don't even want to go over to the PSC meeting for that reason and A&F gets the overflow to the point A&F is packed already at times and you have people going in and out. 4.) I understand the benefits. But clearly the Vice Directors are participating in a very real way at these Thursday committee meetings. Rick, I think you could do this by decree. What do folks think. I went to a club meeting last night and gave an "ARRL Update" presentation to the group. Below is an interesting comment from a member that I thought I'd pass along to ODV. I guess this is for A&F members to think about, but is also food for thought for Barry and maybe others at HQ. We are looking at a huge deficit in revenue verses expenses this year and this is something to consider. It also may be an insignificant cost verses the benefit received, I don't know. Dear ODV Members: On the STEM theme, FYI two missed opportunities for 2020. First, at its January monthly meeting, members of the Public Relations Committee (PRC) laid out a calendar of events throughout the year around which PR campaigns could be designed and executed with the help of field PIOs. Voted down for consideration was National STEM Day on November 8, largely because PRC members felt there is a lack of STEM related programs and support at HQ. A brief background on National STEM Day can be found at: https://nationaltoday.com/stem-steam-day/ Many government agencies, non-profits and schools are participating in this event. In addition, the nation's largest STEM conference, a biennial event, is taking place April 23-26 in Washington, DC with an expected attendance between 250,00 and 300,000. https://usasciencefestival.org/ Director Hippisley and I got involved because there is an Amateur Radio booth which is being staffed by eight northern Virginia teachers who are Hams. Their participation came to our attention last week, and while we don't have full details, we did find out one of the reasons this team is going unaffiliated from ARRL is because of a lack of materials, support and programs, especially for follow-up inquiries after the conference. Part of the requirement to be an exhibitor at this STEM festival is to have hands-on demonstrations, which this group is doing. Many of these lack any introduction to radio electronics (CPOs, flashing LED kits, etc. introduce basic electronics, but not RADIO electronics). Our efforts will be intended to introduce radio: how does radio work, radio communications, and radio electronics. We expect this effort will lead to multiple kit offerings and companion instructional (learning) materials. That would be the ultimate goal, but in the meantime, we would give thousands of potential radio amateurs their introduction to the science of radio. My idea is a branded series of kits, that are compatible with one another, all low-priced. Folks, I just got the A&F Committee minutes from January. I haven't digested them yet, but I couldn't help but notice that there were 5 Vice Directors listed as being in attendance. I spent some time Thursday afternoon at the PS meeting, and there were several Vice Directors there as well. You all know that I have a soft spot in my heart for Vice Directors. In the past it has been the practice that Vice Directors didn't get reimbursed for Thursday expenses, which in most cases would entail one more night of hotel expense plus Wednesday dinner (sumptuous Thursday munchies are already supplied.) But clearly the Vice Directors are participating in a very real way at these Thursday committee meetings. Perhaps it is time to acknowledge this and pick up the tab for Wednesday night for Vice Directors. Is this something that can by declaration, or does it need a motion? Rick, I think you could do this by decree. What do folks think. ARRL ODV: I’ve had a couple of members of the Board family forward me the email below. This is obviously a phishing attempt and we would never send out a message like this. Needless to say, you shouldn’t click on the link included in the message. Who knows what bad things would happen to your computer? Just delete it. It’s not hard to see how the info could be pulled easily from the public domain. All of your email addresses are on the ARRL web page and I’m sure many other places. And it’s a small step from there to have it associated with the organization. I wouldn’t be surprised if arrl.net addresses started getting these next. We’ve also seen attempts this morning to phish some of the staff using a different approach, sending emails that purportedly came from the CEO about a non-existent project.
