Dear Former Member, Although it might not be unfair to provide continuing electronic access to back issues for the periods when you were a member, the League does not have the capability to do so. It would involve keeping thousands of personal digital library records, with data on which members were entitled to which issues. Note that current members are able to access all back issues, including those from before their membership, and even any published during previous lapses. It would be a significant project for the League to implement the history matching, and I am certain that I would be unable to convince the Board to undertake the project. Note that the League understands that members can experience financial hardship, and has a program to assist those members. If a member becomes unemployed, experiences sickness or injury, or has some other situation preventing paying the $49 a year dues, they can join a program where they pay about $12 a year for a few years. If this applies to you, please advise me of the situation (details not needed; I trust you), and we can proceed. 73, Director

A former member angrily complained that he should have access to past issues, digitally during the time of his membership as he paid for those issues. He opted out of print and let his membership lapse. Pros and cons, and can it be done? CQ magazine does this. If you subscribe and are no longer a subscriber the issues are still yours to keep. They will be running these interop message tests throughout month of October. The return call will help them track effectiveness of our traffic handling. I’ve spoken before about similarities between ARRL and AOPA. If you have the time, take half an hour and listen to this interview. Many of you may not be aviators, but there are many parallels with Amateur Radio, for example, new recruitment, aging population, demographics, regulatory issues, providing value to members, new technology, the meaning of “non-profit”, effects of the pandemic, etc. Think about how ARRL could proactively get in front of someone like a Forbes columnist to talk about our hobby in similar fashion.
