Thanks Mike! As I have been saying for the last few Board meetings, we shouldn't be holding up the news of actions taken until after the minutes are approved. I know that's not your call. It's already been more than eight days and the news is spreading by word of mouth and we are not controlling the various stories any more. I've already had a number of phone calls and e-mails asking what happened. Members are interested and do care what we do and don't do. The awards winners could have been announced two Sundays ago. ODV: This is an update on employment discussions with Howard Michel. We have a verbal agreement with Howard that we are in the process of putting in writing. Howard is scheduled to return to China shortly after the middle of August. At that time, he will tell his current employer, face-to-face, that he will be coming to the ARRL. He believes, and I agree, that a face-to-face meeting is the professional approach. We would want the same if the roles were reversed. We need to give Howard the courtesy of being able to talk with his employer in a professional manner before the special Board meeting and before we make it public. This means that the specially-called Board meeting will probably occur sometime in the week of August 20. Assuming a positive vote, the public announcement of the new CEO would occur shortly after that meeting on a date that gives Howard sufficient time to speak to his current employer. President Roderick and I realize that the timing of the special meeting is later than it was last time and that the three weeks between now and a meeting may be awkward as you interact with members. To the extent you believe it is necessary to respond to inquiries, you may want to note that the process is a personnel matter which must remain confidential until the process is complete. Because of contractual obligations to his employer, Howard will begin work in Newington on a part-time basis the first two weeks of October, full-time the last two weeks, and then assume the CEO position November 1, all subject to Board approval. This information remains Board Confidential until such time as an announcement is made. In the course of an ongoing, and quite interesting debate among AMSAT, IARU and ARRL with Bruce Perens, a long time ham radio activist from the Pacific Division about Section 97.113, the FCC business communications rule and its application to the small satellite proceeding, Bruce sent along the following quote from Maxim. I thought this to be most relevant to cite in connection with ongoing internal disputes within our organization. Time, as my Quaker brethren like to say, to come together and reach a sense of the Meeting. Hiram Percy Maxim from September 1927 QST: *And as the last embers of the old pipe turn to grey ash, I ask how it all came about: that the A.R.R.L. should have succeeded and all its opponents failed. The answer is clear. It is because with our opponents there was always some kind of a selfish motive to be served for someone, whereas in our A.R.R.L. we insisted from the beginning that no selfish motive for anybody or anything should ever prevail. Wow, Tom, excellent proofreading! Just some comments: "Mr. Roderick moved the Report of the CEO Search Committee to item 5 on the meeting agenda." That was actually a motion to amend that needed to be seconded and voted on. Not sure if that happened My recollection is that this process did happen. p11 item 19 - motion made but no vote was recorded? Prior to the motion, there is a line "On the motion of Mr. Boehner, seconded by Mr. Tiemstra, the Board ADOPTED the following motion:" Granted that the actual vote was not indicated. p18 item 26 - Did we really award the 2017 professional media award for video reporting for an interview that took place in May 2018? I spoke with Vice Director Bill Morine who is the board liaison to the Public Relations Committee. He is at a Hamfest, but recalls that the Bill Leonard Award was a holdover from 2017, and the interview took place in September 2017. We do not have access to the primary documents at this time, but it should be indicated in the PRC/PSC minutes. --As far as the [Mr. vs. Dr.] that Dave N. brought up, I really never got a read on that, but at least it is consistent through the document. Is this a Roberts R&R recommendation? Dan, great work on the minutes! I thought I would end the week on a high note with word of an extraordinary achievement by one of the ARRL's Volunteer Examiners. Rev. Franz Laugermann, K3FL, of Houston, TX has participated in the administration of 1,000 ARRL VE test sessions. Maria Somma, AB1FM, ARRL VEC Manager, reports that this is the first time in the history of the program that someone has achieved this milestone. To honor K3FL, we plan to put an announcement on the ARRL web site and in the next (October) issue of QST. We will be in contact with Director Woolweaver on the creation and presentation of a plaque commemorating this wonderful achievement. At this point, Rev.
