Harold Please confirm the number of LoTW users (you said it was 73k+). How many Centennial Vibroflex keys were sold? What was the net profit? How do we communicate to the members that we have an affinity insurance program with Liberty Mutual? Do members receive discounts from Liberty as against the normal insurance costs, or does the ARRL just get a cut of the action? What other insurance companies have we Which product divisions in publication sales failed to meet their revenue projections? How much inventory does Amazon require we maintain at their Fulfillment Centers and at how many Centers do we maintain inventory? What percentage of the products shipped to the Fulfillment Centers is returned by Amazon as unsold? Are there plans to charge for the use of the /*Exam Review Online*/ site after it is out of beta and stable? (It has promise). Do we know the sell through/click through rate for the digital ads in digital QST? Do the advertisers view the digital ads as increasing their return on their advertising? Where will the new media facility be located and how much do we project it will cost? [CQ AR logo] NEWS RELEASE January 9, 2015 For Release: Immediate Contact: Rich Moseson, W2VU 516-681-2922 w2vu(a)cq-amateur-radio.com<mailto:w2vu@cq-amateur-radio.com> CQ Combining January/February 2015 Issues, Closing CQ Plus Digital Supplement (Hicksville, NY, January 9, 2015) -- CQ magazine today announced that it will be publishing a combined January/February 2015 issue and will be ceasing publication of its "CQ Plus" digital edition supplement as of the March 2015 issue. Both moves are intended to help restore the magazine's normal schedule for its print edition and to strengthen its foundations moving forward as it enters its eighth decade of publication, said Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA. "These decisions were not made lightly," he added, "but in recognition of the realities of the publishing industry. It's a tough time to be in the magazine business, and we appreciate the patience and loyalty of both our readers and our advertisers." CQ will continue to publish both print and digital editions, but the digital edition will no longer contain the 50-60 additional pages each month that constituted "CQ Plus." Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, noted that he hopes to include some former CQ Plus content within the pages of CQ, but says ham radio will remain the magazine's primary focus, as it has been for the past seven decades. CQ is marking its 70th anniversary of publication as of its January/February issue. As a consequence of the changes, CQ Plus Editor Richard Fisher, KI6SN, will be leaving the CQ staff after serving for many years as a columnist for, and then as editor of, Popular Communications, WorldRadio Online and CQ Plus. He was also CQ magazine's Emergency Communications Editor. "We will miss Richard's many contributions to CQ's products," noted Moseson, "and thank him for his many years of service to our readers." Subscribers to both the print and digital editions of CQ will have their subscriptions extended by one month due to the combined January/February issue. Colleagues - Though I'm sure the topics of dues increase as well as ways to keep the Centennial enthusiasm stoked will get plenty of air time at next week's committee and board meetings, I'd like to express a concern that touches on both of these important topics. I'm not opposed to a dues increase - I understand and agree with the business needs necessitating an increase in dues, especially since we've been doing more under the present dues structure for so long. My concern with a potential dues increase has to do with (1) its timing and (2) the degree of member engagement (or lack thereof) prior to making the decision to raise dues. I'm concerned that our entire organization and membership is coming off of an unprecedented surge of excitement in, re-dedication to, and pride for ARRL stemming from its home-run Centennial year, and not more than two weeks after the dust begins to settle from it (not to mention while we as a Board begin to ponder how to extend that unprecedented enthusiasm and goodwill into 2015 and beyond), our members are going to discover -- having been provided no advance heads up, context, or explanation -- a news story on ARRL's website with a title that reads something to the effect of "ARRL Board meets, Lauds successful Centennial year, Raises member dues by 25%". That surge of excitement, rededication, and pride, I'm afraid, will quickly deflate and turn into major dissatisfaction. I'm not referring to the general and natural dissatisfaction that comes from learning one now has to pay more for a good or service. That we can never control. I'm referring to a more specific and likely more damaging dissatisfaction created by of our choosing to do it so close to the abundantly positive experience everyone had during the Centennial and so close to when we asked donors to contribute an unprecedented amount of money to the Second Century campaign. I'm referring to a more specific and definitely more damaging dissatisfaction created when members perceive, much as we don't intend, that they were broadsided since they will only have heard of our plan to raise their dues after it's already been voted on. "ARRL Board meets, Lauds successful Centennial year, Raises member dues by 25%". Months ago Dr. Woolweaver forwarded to ODV a dues-increase information brief distributed by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), a membership organization much like ours. He recommended that ARRL follow suit since it would extend a deserved (and appreciated) courtesy to our membership, concisely explain why a dues increase is needed, and pre-emptively answer questions our members might ask -- before we act on a dues increase. I don't recall seeing much (any?) response to David's thoughtful posting and idea. (FYI, AOPA's dues-increase announcement and explanation is available for viewing on their website. It does a great job setting the tone and providing crucial explanation. See http://www.aopa.org/Membership/Member-Services-Frequently-Asked-Questions/Me mbership-Dues-Increase-FAQ) Yes, we are the Board. Yes, we have been elected and empowered by our respective members to make organizational decisions on their behalf. No, we cannot and should not clear everything with the entire membership before we make important organizational decisions. But we can and should extend deserved courtesy and build on much needed goodwill by engaging our membership on certain matters before decisions are made, especially matters that mandatorily impact 100% of our League family and their pocketbooks. I submit an alternate approach for your consideration: Table the likely dues increase decision until our July meeting, making the increase effective 01 January 2016. Tabling the dues increase decision until the July meeting would put six months of insulation between the unprecedented enthusiasm and goodwill we worked so hard to achieve during our Centennial year and the deflating effect that news of a dues increase will certainly cause. Tabling the decision until July would provide ARRL time between now and then to carefully develop an information brief similar to AOPA's that establishes the tone, provides crucial background and context, and conveys the fact that we've held the line for our members as long as we possibly could. If we don't establish, publish/post, and command the conversation from the very beginning then other people whom have nothing to lose (unlike us) will do it for us in front of our very own membership. Tabling until July would provide us (ODV and staff) time between now and then to engage our membership at hamfests, club meetings, via QST, in email blasts, etc. about the difficult but necessary choice we need to and will make in July. This wouldn't be to ask for members' permission or take a poll, but to extend a well-deserved courtesy to them before we vote to increase their dues. Despite a few ruffled feathers we'd encounter along the way, this would warm our members up to our difficult decision, softening what would otherwise be taken by many as a hard blow. And, just as above, we would be able to establish the tone, provide crucial background and context, and convey the fact that we've held the line for them as long as we possibly could. There will be natural dissatisfaction in the ranks, no matter what, over a dues increase. We will lose members, no matter what, over a dues increase. The question is "how do we minimize the dissatisfaction and membership loss associated with a necessary dues increase?" I submit that the most effective (and probably only) lever we have that will control the outcome of this question at this juncture is (a) not acting on a dues increase so close to the abundantly successful Centennial our members are still boasting about, and (b) not letting our members learn that their dues are heading north by reading a news story to the effect of "ARRL Board meets, Lauds successful Centennial year, Raises member dues by 25%".
