If you have been following the Logbook of The World stats you know that the delay and queue size have been declining rather steadily since Monday morning, after a weekend during which there was no processing at all. On Friday LoTW was taken off line for previously announced maintenance. This was for the installation of the solid state drives (SSDs) that were authorized by the A&F Committee in November and delivered in late December. The physical installation and initial testing in the IT "sandbox" (their test server) went very smoothly, although completing the transition to the production server took longer than expected. When the system was brought back on line Friday afternoon there was a huge spike in demand that left many users unable to connect, but that eventually settled down. However, another glitch cropped up that caused processing to cease and could not be corrected until Monday morning. Since then the system has been stable and the SSDs are proving to be much faster, as expected. Currently the delay between a file being uploaded and processed is about 8 days and is dropping by one day about every 10 hours. At that rate processing will be essentially current sometime this weekend. Of course, exactly when that occurs will depend on what gets uploaded in the meantime. We expect a further improvement in processing speed once the IT staff has the time to make some additional tweaks to take full advantage of the new hardware. 73, Dave Sumner, K1ZZ
