Media & Public Relations
Reported by Allen Pitts, W1AGP
Dayton was an excellent time, even if I had significant problems getting
home again. Most of the activity at the booth was talking to assorted
club members who wanted information on ways to promote Amateur Radio and
Field Day in their home areas. We were able to listen to their needs
and provide customized plans and materials to meet their goals. In the
vast majority of these cases, the materials were easily available on the
new ARRL website. In addition, approximately 30 of the PR-101 course
disks were requested. The Hello and WeDoThat brochures were also
desired, but the hit of the booth was the printed sheets on community
service. Thanks to Kevin O'Dell, N0IRW; Diana Eng, KC2UHB; Mark
Abramowicz, NT3V; Hope Smith, WB3ANE and Jim Boehner, N2ZZ for their
help. In between things, key elements of the coming video were filmed
including meetings with Col. Wheelock and shots with Diana Eng talking
about the DIY opportunities found in hamfests. The video remains on
target, timeline and budget. The Public Relations Committee monthly
conference call was postponed due to Dayton and held on May 25. May
brought in an above average number of media hits, but once again the
lack of early, timely information about ARES activities, this time
coming out of Alabama, Montana and Missouri, lost us opportunities to
make the news. Summary reports days late (or longer) are not really
helpful and the need for ARES-linked PIOs on scene and wearing only "one
hat" again became apparent. The annual report is currently at the
printers' and expected early next week.

voiced ARRL Audio News for May 26, 2011.
Sales and Marketing
Reported by Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R
May ended with 156,625 members-a gain of 258 members over April. The
gain was a pleasant result, considering we'd predicted a loss for the
month. 68% of May 2011 expirees paid on time (vs. 71% last May). The
most recent 40,000 piece mailing has returned at a rate of .63%, just
over 2 weeks out from the mail date. An email solicitation with a
Memorial Day slant brought in 122 members. Dayton also brought in 175
new and lapsed members. Acquisition of new licensees was up again in
May. 22.65% of new hams licensed in February joined ARRL within 4
months (February-May).
We continue to tally results from the successful ARRL EXPO at 2011
Dayton Hamvention. There were 1,158 memberships taken in Dayton,
including applications from 175 new and lapsed members. There were 10
Life membership applications and Life membership payments made.
Membership dues totaled $61,705, representing 1,858 membership years
(1,918 in 2010).
The skids have returned from Dayton with the remaining inventory of our
publication and product consignment. Once reconciled, sales made in
Dayton will be reported as part of May's business.
Materials for Plano, including a publication and product consignment,
shipped on June 1. An additional 3 skids of material and supplies were
shipped directly from Dayton to Plano.
The warehouse crew fulfilled 1,151 packages for publication and product
orders, 300 membership premiums, and QST mailing supplements. Thanks go
to the mailroom staff for their assistance with processing membership
supplements as the warehouse clerks have directed their efforts to peak
levels of sales fulfillment. Also contributing to the high package
counts have been requests for publicity supplies...free promotional
handouts and brochures to support public demonstrations during Field
Day.
A special upgrade mailing for TravelPlus for Repeaters is being prepared
to mail to 7,200 previous buyers who have not yet purchased the
2011/2012 Edition.
Now Shipping: VEC Challenge Coin, TravelPlus Mobile GPS for Garmin
devices (download).
A consolidation of the front desk telephone into the larger member
services phone group will take place this week. Lines 0200 (front desk)
and 0214 (Lab) will begin rolling into the larger phone
group--distributing these calls throughout the member services team.
This change will (1) reduce backed-up calls at the front desk, (2) allow
staff at the front desk to serve lobby visitors without interruption,
(3) allow member services staff to spend more time with callers,
reducing forwarded calls. There will also be a new voice announcement
and on-hold message thanks to Allen Pitts and NT3V.

Joe updated the Qualifying Run schedule and the weekly QST source web
pages. He also repaired and installed a reconditioned audio
distribution amplifier in the Harris transmitter racks. This
distribution amp is used for the audio side of W1AW's digital/phone
broadcasts.
Scott worked on slow and fast code practice files for the first part of
the month of June. He also assisted the DXCC department.
Field Organization/Public Service Team
ARRL members in Nevada re-elected Joe Giraudo, N7JEH, to a new two-year
term of office as Section Manager. Ballots were counted by Leona Adams,
Gail Iannone and Steve Ewald at ARRL Headquarters on Tuesday, May 24.
Joe's new term of office starts on July 1.
The following incumbent ARRL Section Managers did not face opposition
and were declared elected for their next two-year terms of office
beginning July 1, 2011: Jim Cross, WI3N, Maryland/DC; Al Shuman, K1AKS,
Rich Krohn, N2SMV, Northern New Jersey; New Hampshire; Bob Beaudet,
W1YRC, Rhode Island; Dan Pruitt, AE6SX, San Joaquin Valley; Mel Parkes,
NM7P, Utah.
In West Texas, no nominating petitions were received for the next term
of office of Section Manager by the March 4, 2011, receipt deadline.
The West Texas Section Manager's position will be re-solicited in the
July 2011 issue of QST. An SM elected through the re-solicitation will
serve a term of 18 months. West Texas Section Manager John Dyer, AE5B,
decided not to run for another term of office, and his present term ends
on June 30. John, of Cisco, has been Section Manager since July 2007.
He also served as the SM from October 2002 through June 2005.
Phil Steffora, K6TT, of Los Altos, California, has been appointed as
Santa Clara Valley Section Manager as of May 25. Dave Patton made the
appointment in consultation with Pacific Division Director Bob Vallio,
W6RGG. Phil's appointment extends until June 30, 2012. Steve Ewald and
Leona Adams are in touch with Phil to assist him as he gets started.
Steve worked closely with Ken Bailey (of the Emergency Preparedness
Team), Allen Pitts, and Khrystyne Keane to try to gather news and
information about Amateur Radio's involvement in tornado relief efforts
in Joplin, Missouri. We kept in touch with Midwest Division Director
Cliff Ahrens and ARRL Missouri Section Leaders among others throughout
the week.
