There are very few messages that just go to the ARRL-OD reflector. From time to time we have had Vice Directors (and Directors) who have not been so good at handling confidential material (I should point out that this has been more of a problem with Vice Directors...). It is normal to limit some information distribution to those that "need to know" and who are corporately accountable. This last point is important - Vice Directors do not have the same standing and liability, as I understand it. In this case, where the issue was a staff resignation, I did let my Vice Director know about it - though not on the same day. Mike et al, Amen to each and every point. I believe this arbitrary separation is just an attitude holdover from the old board way of doing things. It is disrespectful and demeaning to the independently elected Vice Directors to have Directors and others filtering information. Greetings all, I agree that a discussion as Mike has outlined in his comments would be a good thing. As a Vice Director, I do not like being left out. And as Mike has pointed out, the primary function or role of a Vice Director is to be "fully" ready to step in and cover for an absent Director. To be included in even delicate matters, will serve as a learning experience. And we all should be always willing to learn, and to lead when ready. I would like to participate in open discussion with all. Any other comments, or thoughts? Donors making a contribution of $30 or more will receive at $10 off coupon for us on a future ARRL purchase. Due to the timing of the Thanksgiving holiday and peak levels of telephone traffic on Monday, November 30, the large volume of membership mail received after the close of business on Wednesday, November 25 will be processed in the first days of December. Product Sales November product sales were $270,837. The sales forecast was $303,451. YTD, we are ahead of forecast by $12,817. Fewer individuals placed direct orders in November, an expected result following our aggressive frontloading of 2010 Handbook sales in October. October Handbook sales had exceeded forecast by over $90k. November Handbook sales exceeded forecast by nearly $3,000. Dealer sales exceeded direct sales this month, boosted by especially large reorders for the Handbook. A meeting was conducted to plan the implementation of an "ARRL Online Guest Account" concept-planned for the new ARRL web site. Personnel matters are confidential and any discussion of an employee's details must not be discussed outside the board. Yes we're all hams trying to get along with everyone and provide our members with as much information as possible but that does not entitle us to ignore employment laws. If an individual employee chooses to make certain details of their employment public that is their business but it does not give us any additional authority to do so. That is not my rule or ARRL's, that is the law. It is the HQ senior management's responsible to address and handle these employment matters, not the board. I don't know why the Vice Directors were not advised of this action, at least at the time the SM's were, just to be aware of it but the responsible Directors were. Just be sure and remember these things when questions from members arise regarding an ARRL employee (past or present).
