I found that Verizon (my ISP) has blocked incoming ODV posts once again. Barry was kind enough to work with me last week to see that Verizon unblocked ODV messages going to Officers and board members using their internet services. Somewhere between then and now, Verizon quietly blocked the messages. So if my message about mileage allowance didn't make any sense, please ignore it, Verizon didn't permit the message to pass through. I've sent a message to Barry to switch my ODV messages to go to another email address. Sorry for the confusion. - Bill N3LLR

Has anyone seen that the IRS has raised the mileage allowance from 40.5 cents per mile to 48.5 cents per mile effective 9/1/05 through 12/31/05? Have we raised our reimbursable mileage rate to the 48.5 cents per mile also? - Bill N3LLR

The Relief effort is winding down for us as normal telecommunications infrastructure is restored. Reports from the field indicate that cell phones, landline telephony and electric power are returning to many of the areas that were damaged by Katrina. 2.. As near as we can tell, there are around 1,000 volunteer amateur radio operators currently deployed in the Gulf Coast and other areas such as evacuee centers. The supply of operators is currently sufficient but there are some concerns about replacement operators. The amateur radio community has demonstrated an incredible commitment to public service. We should be proud of our efforts. 3.. We have shipped many of the HF and VHF Radios and accessories such as headphones, power supplies, etc. to Montgomery for deployment. Dennis reports that the equipment supply is currently sufficient. 4.. Duracell has donated 5,000 AA batteries for use in the field. Thanks to Mary Hobart for her efforts. 5.. The $100,000 CNCS grant has been officially approved. On the PR front, Allen Pitts reports that his quick Google search came up with 17 pages of "hits" about amateur radio and Katrina. Allen has a professional videographer, a ham, working in the Gulf Coast on obtaining footage of our efforts. 7.. Our Washington team, along with President Haynie, is submitting testimony about Amateur Radio's role in the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts for use at the upcoming Congressional hearing on Hurricane Katrina. And, in the life goes on department, congratulations to Zoe Belliveau on obtaining her Technician License today and Maria Somma on upgrading to Extra today. Bob, I hope that we do get that many applications, but if not, our proposal to CNCS includes using any remaining funds to set up Ham Aid back up go bags for hams us to have on hand for hams deployed on long assignments. While the grant limits ARRL to modest awards, it is a clear recognition by CNCS of the value of ham radio when all else fails. At this point we have $107,000 to disburse and additional contributions to this Ham Aid Fund may come in and will be added to the coffers. We are not conducting a full public campaign, since this is the time of year that we seek contributions for Spectrum Defense....and Katrina has certainly highlighted the value of our frequencies like never before! Those who inquire may send a contribution payable to ARRL and earmarked for Ham Aid. Rick Lindquist will post a story with the details of the rant and how these grant awards will be made, but I wanted you to read the procedures and view the form in advance of that. (See attached) We are trying to keep this process as simple as possible, and our Finance staff will handle these disbursements. I explained the process at the SW Division convention this past weekend and no serious questions arose. I hope that is an indicator that our procedures and goals are clear. Any questions or comments about the grant or the process should come to me. My only regret is that we cannot cover all expenses for all hams who have given so much....no only in this crisis, but for so many other disasters over the decades. So those who apply for and receive a per diem expense reimbursement, approved by their SM or SEC, receive it for themselves and for so many ham volutneers who have gone before.
