No. 2191-U June 4, 2004 ARRL OFFICERS, DIRECTORS, AND VICE DIRECTORS: In accordance with Standing Order 19, you are hereby notified that the formal call for the 2004 Second Meeting of the ARRL Board of Directors, July 16-17, 2004, will be mailed on or about June 16. Please note the provisions of Article 9 of the ARRL Articles of Association: These articles may be amended by a three-fourths vote of all Directors, or, provided due notice of the proposed amendment shall have been placed in the mail to each Director at least thirty days in advance, by a two-thirds vote of all Directors. The Board of Directors may from time to time adopt By-Laws not inconsistent with the Articles and applicable statutes. By-Laws may be amended by a three-fourths vote of all Directors, or, provided due notice of the proposed amendment shall have been placed in the mail to each Director at least thirty days in advance, by a two-thirds vote of all Directors. Notices shall be sent by First-Class mail. Our meeting will be held at the Hartford/Windsor Airport Marriott, 88 Day Hill Rd., Windsor, CT. A group dinner is scheduled for Thursday evening, July 15. The Board meeting will begin at 8:30am Friday and is expected to be completed by dinnertime Saturday. Expenses related to Board Meeting attendance and travel will only be reimbursed for Thursday through Sunday. Should your membership on a committee require you to arrive earlier to attend a meeting of that committee, the additional expenses will be charged to the appropriate committee account. Revised Standing Order 92-1.75 reads: "The Board of Directors authorizes the attendance of Vice Directors at Board Meetings. Expenses for attendance at one Board Meeting per year will be chargeable to the Board Meeting account. Vice Directors are encouraged to attend the Annual meeting whenever possible." Vice Directors who attended the January Board Meeting in the role of Vice Director are invited to attend the July Meeting and to join the Board members for the contracted group meals on Thursday evening, Friday noon and evening, and Saturday noon, but otherwise to attend at their own expense. 73, Sincerely, David Sumner, K1ZZ Secretary

100% cotton oxford cloth is a particularly obnoxious fabric to iron. As a teenager (back when dinosaurs roamed the earth), I had a lot of blouses for school made of the wretched stuff and had to iron them until they passed parental inspection. The fabric could put you in the insane asylum on a good day, plus while I was doing battle with it, my mom had me trapped in one place so she could chew me out at length about whatever I had done wrong *this* week. To this day, ironing clothes is not my thing! When we got married, I told Carter I'd do a lot of stuff for him, but we were sending his shirts out. 73 - Kay N3KN

4 JUN, 2004 - 1245 CST Hello Jim... The real question is how much starch does it take to keep these all cotton shirts reasonably smooth? We quit using starch a couple of decades ago and don't plan to use it again. :) BTW, In the last six months, I have purchased several all cotton shirts that use a new permanent press treatment that is guaranteed for at least 17 washings. It really works. The shirts do not easily wrinkle when worn and are absolutely smooth when laundered and tumble-dried according to directions. Glad you are now back in the 21st century. We lost power last Saturday evening for a couple of hours during a torrential rain and the only thing keeping my finished basement radio room dry was a large 12 VDC (back-up) marine bilge pump powered by a 140 Amp marine deep-discharge battery. - Dick Isely

Actually what Dick is saying is that his wife told him she was not going to iron them. I send mine to the cleaners. They look good. Also now have power. Glad to have AC back. Jim Haynie

The short-sleeve and twill long-sleeve dress shirts have been slow sellers and are being discontinued. Barker is working on a replacement for the blue and white long-sleeve Oxford dress shirts. The current shirts (the ones being discontinued) are 100% cotton, and as Dick Isely noted are not the easiest shirts to care for. I recommend a car (cigarette lighter plug) charger for your cell phone. 3 JUN, 2004 - 1730 CDT I too hate to see the short and long sleeved dress shirts go away. However, I can understand why at least the long sleeved ones are being discontinued... they are of very poor quality... at least the blue one I ordered is. The tailoring is poor and the permanent press treatment of this all cotton shirt is non-existent. It arrived looking like it had been slept in, and it must be carefully ironed each time before use... and then it looks slept in the minute I sit down or put a coat or jacket on over it. I have only worn it twice and I may never wear it again. And yes, I have officially complained about it to ARRL staff and have yet to receive a response. On the other hand, the two blue short sleeved cotton/dacron oxford cloth dress shirts I have are great. The tailoring is precise and they can be worn all day and still look very good. I believe Barker Speciality used suppliers in the same country; Guatamala. But I wonder if they used the same supplier. 73 - Dick, W9GIG

The IN-news has an item about the Barker Specialty site being revised. When I went to take a look at it, I noticed that several items are being discontinued, including the oxford cloth long-sleeved dress shirts (blue and white) and the twill dress shirts (tan) that some of us like to wear at conventions. If you want these shirts, now would be a good time to order before they run out of your size in the color you prefer. I'm sorry to see these items go away, but I guess they just didn't sell well enough to survive. 73 - Kay N3KN
