23 SEP, 2003 - 1545 CDT The spam war goes on... ever escalating. Sort of reminds me of the naval arms race that really got going around 1880 and extended all the way to the end of WWII. One government would design a bigger rifled cannon and armor-piercing shell, only to have another government design better steel armor. This process went round and round until the Japanese in WWII had a pair of battleships under construction that had 18" main batteries. They were sunk before they ever saw surface action. The 16" rifles and 36" armor on our WI and NJ class battleships are currently the largest and thickest will probably remain so. Hopefully the spam war will end on a similar note... not being used anymore. 73 - Dick, W9GIG

[ARRL-ODV:9473] Earthlink---Retraction

I must apologize for my earlier note which now appears premature, although at the time I wrote it I was reporting the situation verbatim from my conversations with the Earthlink representative who had assured me the problem was resolved. After still seeing delaying on messages to Earthlink this afternoon I called back and the same guy gave me a different story. He now tells me the situation was more than he had initially reported and, in addition to the originally reported problem, it also is a result of the ratio of spam to total messages coming from arrl.net to Earthlink. It exceeds their internal limits and therefore we will continue to see messages delayed. He offered no solution for us except to reduce the amount of spam even though he admitted that their actions were an "imperfect solution" and that they've even made exceptions for other large ISPs who in the past had violated their internal standards. We are trying to kick the problem upstairs at Earthlink to higher authorities (if they'll return phone calls) since we have 2,600 members using Earthlink addresses. Again, I apologize for my earlier message but am royally PO'd at Earthlink for not telling the entire story. Barry

The situation whereby Earthlink was blocking messages from arrl.net to their system has finally been resolved. Actually, they were putting the messages in a process described as "null routing" which is basically delaying the delivery of the messages. In this case the delay could have been up to 8 hours or more. However, Earthlink's actions were not the direct result of what we thought might have been a large amount of spam coming through arrl.net. It was much more convuluted than that. Apparently a spammer was using a fake e-mail address in the "from" line of his messages. While this is not new or suprising, this particular address was one that Earthlink had designated (they thought it was a private, known only to them address) as a "spam trap". Any mail sent to this address was automatically considered as spam and the source, a spam host. They would then start null routing all messages from that domain for 8 hours. At the end of the process, they would remove the block. What happened was, this spammer sent messages to bad arrl.net addresses (again, not surprising) which would bounce as "addresses unknown". They would bounce back to the "from" address in the spam which was the super secret spam trap address at Earthlink. Earthlink's automated process identified the messages as coming from arrl.net and would block traffic from the server. Then, when the block was removed 8 hours later, mail would start flowing, again including messages bounced to the super secret address. The block would go back on. And around and around it would go. This is why we were seeing intermittent service. The entire process on both sides was automated. To resolve the problem, the arrl.net server has been configured to reject any connections for messages that include the super secret return address. That way, none of these messages will be accepted by our system. In addition, we have asked Earhlink to "whitelist" the arrl.net servers but they have to review our request and we won't know for a while. We will post an item to the ARRL web page once we can see messages flowing smoothly through to Earthlink again. In summary, this whole situation is the result of a well intentioned, but flawed attempt to block spam. A situation which will arise again in a different form, I'm positive. 73, Barry, N1VXY

Art, Logbook credits are not refundable and not transferrable. We'll make that clear in the documentation. Once you have purchased Logbook credits, your will be credited with them and can use them until they are gone. If there is a price increase, your next purchase will be at the prevailing rate. Credits will be used on a first-in, first-out basis. Art, All of the major personalities at WLW, Clear Channel's flagship station located in Cincinnati, are agog over taking over the FCC. Bill Cunningham, best known for chewing out nuns during his call-in show, has said he is up to be Chairman. He is, of course, a Great American. Among the other things one can look forward to is an expansion of his bestial super conservatism and his ultimate surrender of what remains of his private law practice. The rest of the fellows (sorry, but it is a guys club) are planning on becoming either commissioners or department heads. One great advantage to all this is that the Cincinnati Reds and soon, the Cincinnati Bengals will be broadcast over the entire Clear Channel network. Jim W. In a recent deal, CCU purchased a 50% interest in the U.S. Congress, and is reportedly close to striking a deal to purchase The White House.
